Tips for Decorating a Child’s Bedroom

Designing your child’s bedroom? The designing process can get a little overwhelming, but having a plan will save you time and money. More importantly the end result will be a space you and your child will love. Here are are tips on decorating a child’s bedroom:

Ask Your Child
When designing a bedroom for your child, it’s important to get his/her opinion first. Here are a few questions parents should ask their child before starting the decorating:

1. Describe your dream bedroom.
2. What do you like about your current bedroom?
3. What would you change about your current bedroom?
4. What are you favorite colors?

Of course, not all of their ideas may be practical or fit in the budget, but this exercise helps make the child feel involved in the process. From their answers you will be able to pick up on colors and themes (i.e. trucks, butterflies, dinosaurs} that will help inspire the room’s look and feel.

Add Color

Selecting a color scheme may come easy to some and more difficult for others. The color will communicate the room’s temperature – typically blues and greens are cool hues, while reds and yellows are warm. Keep in mind a room’s color palette typically consists of three main colors – one or two will be more dominate than the third which is called an “accent” color. Knowing how you want to feel in a room will help in the color selection. Once the main color has been decided, a color wheel can guide you to finding the perfect accent colors. The color wheel is an important piece of basic of color design. It’s literally a wheel with twelve colors on it made up of primary, secondary and tertiary colors.
If building a color scheme seems difficult, start by plucking colors from a patterned fabric in an existing pillow, bed linen or upholstered chair. In doing so, you already have an element that pulls the colors together and is harmonious. For example, the upholstered chair and floor length drapes incorporates the pink, blue & white color scheme in this girl’s bedroom by designer Steven Miller.

Select Furniture
Purchasing a child’s bed, if you don’t already have one, should be first on the list. But before you got out and purchase furniture know the measurements of the room. In some cases a room simply isn’t big enough for a full size bed. In addition, if the room is for two or more children you may think about trundle or bunk beds to save space {example above by Bear & Hill Interiors}. Beds that provide storage are also great options for smaller sized rooms.
Other furniture pieces to consider for a child’s bedroom would be:

* Dresser
* Bed side table
* Desk and chair
* Bookshelf

Keep in mind the room’s color scheme and future uses when selecting the finish or color of the furniture pieces. Also, keep don’t forget an item that is painted can always be painted in another color down the road.

Dress the Bed
There are so many more options available today for kids bedding – girls and boys. There are a lot of custom bedding options for children too. Mixing larger patterns with smaller patterns and solids helps to keep a balanced look. Don’t go overboard with any particular pattern. The room above by Serena & Lily balances the busy pattern in the canopy and ottoman by keeping the duvet solid and the wall pattern large.

Light it Up
Don’t neglect lighting as a fun decorative element. According to the American Lighting Association there are three basic types of lighting: general, task and accent. In a child’s bedroom two will be necessary – general and task. The general could be can lights or a pendant in the center of the room. Table and floor lamps and pendants too can offer needed task lighting by the bed, desk or reading chair.

Soften the Floor
Adding an area rug in your child’s bedroom can muffle sound, ground the space visually and add a restful quality. An area rug is a great place to add color, pattern and texture. Again, if you are repeating a pattern already in the room, you will want to select a rug with a similar pattern that is either larger or smaller. In terms size, don’t get a rug so large that it touches the baseboard around the room. This is when having the room’s measurements ahead of time will pay off.

Get Creative
Let your imagination run wild. A child’s room should be inspirational and can break some of the “rules” other rooms shouldn’t. Dressing up the walls with a mural, decals or artwork is a great way to communicate the room’s theme. Above designers Lisa Martensen and Jan Jones create a magical girl’s bedroom featuring a hand painted Chinoiserie mural. This sort of artwork can get pricey, so another great option is to use removal wall decals.

Personalize It
Adding personalized items in your child’s bedroom makes it just that more special. Many artists today personalize wall letters or canvas pieces. I love this one by Oopsy Daisy. Also, a throw pillow with a monogram is always a nice touch.

Provide Storage
Storage options are a must for a child’s bedroom. As children get older they seem to accumulate more and more toys so space will become an issue. The right furnishings will help. Vertical storage such as a bookcase {braced on the wall for safety}, bed side table with drawers and a bed with built-in-store are all great furniture options. Bins, baskets and other containers will help keep toys, art supplies and books corralled, but each needs to have a home. Again, parents are in luck because there are so many stylish storage options available. Love these colorful owl bins by DwellStudio.

Most importantly, have fun! Decorating should be an enjoyable process. Also, don’t stress about getting it all done in 72 hours. Many of my favorite rooms evolve with time.

where the wild things are : a play space for your little animals

I’m not big on obvious themes, but the whole animals idea really kind of smacked me in the face when I laid eyes on this fantabulous elephant bookshelf. Children should definitely have their own spaces, defined by great design which can spark their imaginations and inspire them to create. I think this space does just that — with touches of bright color, irresistible patterns and a few fun combinations. It has places for their toys, areas to organize for the parents who wish to instill those life long habits, and most importantly, it gives them their own space to have fun… to take a walk on the wild side, if you will. I totally want this room.

1. Of course, given the theme, it’s only appropriate that we begin with this adorable little elephant bookshelf via the fabulous DwellStudio designers. It’s so cute. How can your kids not love it?

2. Serving as 3-d puzzles, these little magnetic animals (also from DwellStudio) can be disassembled and rebuilt, in any configuration. My 16 month old, my 2.75 year old, and my 5 year old, would all love these. Adding to Christmas list… check.

3. Of course the room needs a touch of color to bring it all together. Serena and Lily’s Sprout Wall Paint does just that.

4. The perfect piece of wall art to give the room yet another touch of bright color. I love this composition.

5. This piece of furniture gives a nod to modern design, and offers a sleek storage solution that is easily accessible for little hands. I think with an application of this vinyl wall decal, it gives it a touch of custom flair, and another layer of added color.

6. Another interactive piece for the room, these adhesive chalkboard animals take it up a notch.

7. These soft Serena and Lily square chairs provide a fun and comfy seating arrangement.

8. In contrast to the modern dresser, this little table provides an excellent area for creating til their hearts are content… and the Bradshaw Kirchofer pieces can be painted in any color. I personally love the aqua finish (as seen in the square.)

9. This light from Oilo is like the crowning jewel to the room. Love the stripes and added layer of pattern that it brings.

10. This clever little splat mat, catches all their creating til their hearts are content… so you’re content with the saved floor.

11. And last but not least…these awesome organic animal storage baskets are the perfect area for organized toys, from princess dolls to race cars.
