With shrinking homes and growing families, it’s smart of all of us to think about shared spaces — and a full time slumber party for siblings can be an absolute blast! Bunking them together while they are young with good bones and versatile pieces can form memories, bonds, and fabulous design to last a lifetime. Here is a little space for sister and brother, with greys, blues and yellows to really up the ante… and the coolness factor for both siblings.
1. These Oilo pendant lights add character to the room, and make for great late night reading fests… without disturbing one’s neighbor.
2. This Bratt Decor armoire would look pretty awesome, (in a white finish) personalized in coordinating sides with some vinyl lettering like these (in yellow). Not to mention the wonderful storage it provides. A godsend on it’s own.
3. Coordinating headboards — these are from Serena and Lily — in solid fabric make for an easy switch over when rooms are changed and ways are parted. They make handsome mainstays in the shared space, with great nail head trim for a real touch of detail.
4. These color band pillows in bold yellow borders would work for a boy… and a girl. Topped off with their own personal monogram (to the left) makes them feel like they still have their very own space, even if it is a shared one. The additional George lumbar pillow brings in shades from the sheet pattern to the top of the bed.
5. This Gemini bench at the foot of each bed brings in warmer, stained tones to the room and makes a great space for stashing their things.
6. The bedding: Create a custom duvet for sister in this Navy Garadenia floral fabric from Serena and Lily, reversing to this fun pinstripe and Goldenrod Cotton piping. Brother’s custom duvet would be wonderful in this patterned Navy Basketweave — again, tying it together with the trimmed yellow piping and reversing to the same Slate Seersucker pinstripe. Tuck siblings in tight in between these Goldenrod Mosaic sheets, and add this slate gray/blue Cabin quilt {which can be reversed and makes a versatile, additional bed covering when folded at the foot of the bed} for extra warmth on cooler nights.
7. These beautiful paintings from artist Todd Clark bring another dimension of color into the room with dark and light blues, aquas, yellows and greys. I especially love the painting of the two birds, seemingly appropriate for a siblings’ shared space.
8. Of course, a nice grey paint ties the room together, quietly.
9. Just a hint of the accessories that could be found in the room: this Rikshaw Design elephant pillow brings in another layer of interest, and can be added to their fabrics for a an additional color. Gender specific accessories can also be added, to further personalize their own little spaces.
What a challenging idea to combine siblings of different genders! How would you do your children’s rooms, if they were of different gender, and you needed to save on space? Would they go for it? How could you up the coolness factor to make sure they would? And at what age would you move them out? These smart purchases will absolutely sustain through their childhood, and beyond.
