At Last
Five days before I was married, straight-line winds, in excess of 100 miles per hour, barrelled through my home town. 70% of the county was left without power and, consequently, without air conditioning, including the sites we’d chosen for the rehearsal dinner, the bridesmaid’s luncheon, the church and the reception hall. Our guests stayed in dark hotels, and terribly humid July temperatures passed the 90 degree mark.
The power was restored less than 24 hours before the I-dos and, in a southern air-conditioned ballroom, I danced with my new husband as Etta James’ melodic voice played in the background, “At last, my love has come along.” At long, long last.
Three kids and two cities later, I find myself singing the same song again, though this time it is a different part of her lyrics that resonate with me. A vision finally fulfilled, Polka Dot Peacock has finally opened and I am floating on air. As Etta James sings, “I found a dream that I could speak to; a dream that I can call my own. I found a thrill to rest my cheek to; a thrill that I have never known.”
